The core theme of Final Fantasy – misusing natural resources, and having serious consequences for that – is as strong in the movie as it ever was in any of the games. Not the best, granted, as The Spirits Within does have quite a lot of problems.īut to everyone grumbling about how it’s “not Final Fantasy,” I don’t really get that, given the breadth and scope that Final Fantasy has come to represent. I actually think it’s up there with some of the better video game movie adaptations.
I did not and continue to not hate The Spirits Within. I was a huge Final Fantasy nerd at the time, riding high on FF7 and still not yet disillusioned with FF8 (I think at that point, I’d still only played the demo). I saw it in the theater! One of the few movies I’ve done that for.
